PRELUDE

BRINGING IN THE LIGHT OF CHRIST                                    by the Acolytes

*PROCESSIONAL HYMN                                                                      #280

“All Glory, Laud, and Honor”

*PALM SUNDAY LITANY

Leader: Today we recall the events of the first Holy Week so many years ago.

People: We remember how it started with Jesus entering the Holy City.

Leader: As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, "Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find a colt tied there which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' tell him, 'The Lord needs it.'"

People: Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as Jesus had told them.  As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?" They replied, "The Lord needs it."

Leader: They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it.  As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen, saying:

People: "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"

Leader: Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples!"

People: "I tell you," Jesus replied, "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out."

UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION & WORDS OF PROMISE

Hold us close, patient God, for we know how hard this week can be.  We see our own failures mirrored in the Passion story.  We know we betray the trust given to us.  We treat your creation with indifference.  We deny your love by covering up our talents and hiding behind low self-esteem,  We are frightened by the costliness of following you and fear that we will be found fleeing the scene or joining in with the accusing crowd.  Loving God, hold us close so we may move through the shadows, confront the darkness and rejoice in the surprising triumph of your stronger-than-death love.  Amen.

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION   (In unison)

Grateful for your grace that is new every morning and thankful that the gates of righteousness are open to us, we bring our gifts to your table, O God.  We dedicate our offerings and ourselves, that the reign of Jesus Christ may be realized and celebrated wherever Christians gather to worship and everywhere we scatter to serve.  May every knee bow at the name of Jesus and every tongue confess that Christ is the world’s salvation.  Amen.

The Passion Story

with O Sacred Head, Now Wounded

A Passion Litany

Leader:                         It is true that the people welcomed Jesus into their midst. Their hosannas rang out, they called upon him as a savior, a mighty king.

People:                         They hoped that the he would cast the oppressors out of their land and bring them glory and honor as did King David before him.

Leader:                         But Jesus walked a different path to glory and worked in a different way to bring God's salvation to the people.

People:                         The people did not understand this way - and when Jesus was betrayed into the hands of the authorities and did not fight, they turned on him, seeing him as a failure.

Leader:                         Even as he lay down his life for them, those closest to him fled in fear.

People:                         Even Peter, the rock upon which the church is founded thought of his own needs first.

Matthew 26:14-56

O sacred head, now wounded,

with grief and shame weighed down

now scornfully surrounded with thorns, thine only crown:

how pale thou art with anguish, with sore abuse and scorn!

How does that visage languish which once was bright as morn!

Matthew 26:57- 27:31

What thou my Lord, hast suffered was all for sinners’ gain;

mine, mine was the transgression, but thine the deadly pain.

Lo, here I fall, my Savior!  ‘Tis I deserve thy place;

look on me with thy favor, vouchsafe to me thy grace.

Matthew 27:32-54

What language shall I borrow to thank thee, dearest friend,

for this thy dying sorrow, the pity without end?

O make me thine forever; and should I fainting be,

Lord, let me never, never outlive my love to thee.

Matthew 27:55-66

Be near when I am dying O show thy cross to me!

And, for my succor flying, come, Lord, to set me free.

These eyes, new faith receiving, from thee shall never more;

For those who die believing, die safely in thy love.
