UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION & WORDS OF PROMISE
Gracious God, as we receive into the congregation another class of young people, we ask that their professions of faith will be living testimonies of their lives. We know what doubts and questions we were plagued with in our youth and how necessary it was for us to cling with all our might to our baptism and confirmation despite them. We know that our faith is the instruction of a lifetime and not the whim of a moment. Save us, Lord, from trusting in ourselves and help us to reaffirm our faith during this time of confirmation. Amen.

Our
Journey Together
We began our journey in faith
together in January of 2004. The
schedule was set and we began. We
gathered to share a meal provided by our Confirmand’s parents, study and learn from
the Scriptures and each other under the guidance of the Holy Spirit The study was based on the Christian Year and
surrounded the theme “Claim the Name.”
Our topics included studying about
the various seasons of the Church Year; looking at Wesleyan theology;
discussing works of piety and works of mercy and learning what it means to be a
disciple of Jesus Christ. Each
Confirmand had a mentor they met with several times. Life verses were chosen by each young
person. At our last session, we wrote
the worship service for Confirmation Sunday.
We went to the Bishop’s Rally with
the Confirmands on March 6. Beginning
with a photo-opt with Bishop Lee, we attended opening worship, a workshop on
contemporary worship/contextual worship, ate in the Adrian College cafeteria, took
in another workshop on opportunities in the District and Conference for youth
leadership and finished with a Service of Holy Communion led by Bishop Lee.
On May 22, we took a trip to Grand
Rapids to see and hear how United Methodists are in mission and ministry in
that city. We began our day at the
United Methodist Community House - we toured the site, saw and heard about the
many ministries which they do in Jesus’ name for the community.
Because of the generosity of our
congregation, we were able to present a check for $300 to the President of the
Community House Board, Bob Richards.
They were having a Youth Day in which to raise funds for the Youth
Summer Program. We each received a
colorful t-shirt from their “Sole for Soul” Walk that day. We then made our way over to South End
Community Outreach Ministries. Don, a
SECOM volunteer, took us on a trip through their food pantry using one of the
Confirmands as a parent of a needy family of five. We had lunch at a local eatery, “Blue
McDonald’s”, that had recently been remodeled in the local neighborhood and
visited a Mexican food store (got some wonderful pastries.) Our next stop was Clark Retirement
Community. We divided up into two groups
and had the “full” tour of that marvelous place. Everyone wanted to move in.
Clark offers a full continuum of
care to the nearly 400 residents. We did
a little shopping and had dinner. Then,
we worshiped at Calvary Church - a little different service than we normally
have here. It was a full and fun day of
learning and sharing together.
We are very grateful to the parents who have nurtured
these children and faithfully brought their sons and daughters to worship and
to learn about the Christian faith. We
are so appreciative of the mentors who shared their faith stories with these
Confirmands. We thank this congregation
for supporting and loving these youth as they journey in faith. May God’s richest blessings be with you all. Č Pastor Dale and Judy
