CALL TO CONFESSION

When we are called saints the idea jars us, for we are not saintly people. But we are seekers after God's will, who have been powerfully claimed by Jesus Christ.  Remembering who we are intended to be, let us come to God's holy place to find forgiveness, healing and empowerment.

UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O God, our God, we confess that we have lifted up our souls to what is false.  We have deceived ourselves and other people. The life we have led is not worthy of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Our words and actions have imprisoned others rather than setting them free, and we ourselves are bound by our prejudices and inhumanity.  Forgive us, O God, for we cannot live in our unfaithfulness; help us to become the persons we might yet be, in Christ's service, beginning today.  Amen.

We are inspired, loving God, by the commitment of saints in times past and rejoice in our present opportunity to support this faith community.  Today, we offer our gifts of health kits, so that the saints at home and abroad will know solid support in times of need.  We ask your blessing on all these gifts, O God for we have put our money where our faith is, and we give thanks.  Amen.

When my time in this land — will come to an end,

Crossing Over There

Words and Music by Pepper Choplin

I have been to the mountain and I’ve looked over Jordan,

but the land is beyond my hopeful stare.

But the little I can see is so beautiful to me,

and I long to cross over, over there.

Well, I used to think this life was meant to be sweet

and the path I would walk was clear and fair.

But now more and more, I am drawn to this shore,

and I long to cross over, over there.

There’s a boat that crosses over and I know the Captain,

and he has already paid my fare.

When he calls me by name, my place I will claim

and we’ll sail, we will sail, — we will sail on that boat

over there, sailing over, over there.

When my time in this land — will come to an end,

I will close my eyes in final prayer.

But I won’t be surprised when I open up my eyes

on a boat crossing over — over there,

over there, over there.

This Choral Anthem is an optimistic song of yearning for the joys

of heaven and is set on the poetic banks of the Jordan River.

From the difficulties and pains of life, the song wistfully looks forward to the promise of heaven’s bliss.  It speaks of the boat that crosses and the Captain who has already paid the fare.

From there it develops into an expression of hope

before suddenly returning to the quiet certainty that one day

we will experience the peace of heaven - “over there.”

The choir offers this anthem in loving memory for all the saints who have “crossed over” in this past year.
