     *HYMN OF PRAISE

“Down By the Jordan”

Tune: Lobe den herren (#139)

Down by the Jordan, a prohphet named John was baptizing,

preaching a message the people found bold and surprising.

"God will forgive! Show that you’ll change how you live!

Surely God’s new day is rising!"

There by the river, the crowd came with great expectation:

"Are you God’s Chosen One, sent here to rescue our nation?"

"No!" John replied. "He who is mightier than I

judges and offers salvation."

Jesus, you went to be baptized along with the others,

taking your place among sinners, God’s lost sons and daughters.

Then with great love, God’s Spirit came as a dove!

Your work began in those waters.

Here in the Church, we are baptized and filled with God’s Spirit. Freed and forgiven we’re welcomed with joy! Can you hear it?

This is God’s sign! This is how God says, "You’re mine!"

Let’s take the good news and share it!

     *SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

If you have a prayer joy or concern you would like shared

during the Prayer of the People, please hand it to an usher

during the Prayer Hymn.

PRAYER HYMN                                                                               #2025

            “As the Deer”

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

At Jesus’ baptism the Spirit broke through Earth’s boundaries; eternity gushed into the world of time to tell us again that God was with us: that the shepherd had come to gather his sheep in his arms. Spirit, tear open the heavens. Break through our set-in-stone boundaries and descend right into the depths of our hearts. Pour new life into us with your free rivers of grace.  Amen.

      SACRAMENT OF HOLY COMMUNION

Invitation to the Table

The Great Thanksgiving for The Baptism of Our Lord

Let us lift up our hearts.

We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. .

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is indeed right to give you our thanks and praise, O God, for you rule over the mighty waters and baptize us into your life. When your voice first thundered over the seas your brooding Spirit brought forth the earth from the void and breathed life into all your creatures. You called your people to follow your ways, and sent your servant, John the Baptizer, to proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. John pointed to the one who was to come— your beloved child, Jesus the Christ —who came among us, strengthening us and blessing us with your peace. When he was baptized in the fearful waters of death you raised him to life and tore open the heavens so that all might be baptized with your Holy Spirit and enter into your presence confident of being declared to be the children who please you. Therefore, with our hearts lifted high, we offer you thanks and praise at all times

through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
