THE GATHERING TO WORSHIP

INFORMAL TIME OF HYMN SINGING

PRELUDE

BRINGING IN THE LIGHT OF CHRIST

WELCOME AND PARISH NOTES

       *CALL TO WORSHIP

One:    Once upon a time

            a wise man offered a challenge;

All:       "What is the greatest commandment?"

One:    The calendars on our desks share a vision

            of greatness; bills to pay, phone calls to return,

            appointments to keep.

All:      Love the Lord your God.

One:    The cameras of our memories share what commands us; children to bathe and partners to help, parents calling and grandchildren hopeful.

All:      Love the Lord your God

            with all your heart, and with all your soul,

            and with all your mind.

One:    Still the Spirit lures us to new priorities;

            open spaces to experience wonder,

            strangers becoming friends,

            devotion to that which transcends.

All:      Love the Lord your God

            with all your heart, and with all your soul, and

            with all your mind.  Love your neighbor as yourself.

    *HYMN OF PRAISE                                                                       #569

If you have a prayer joy or concern you would like shared during the Prayer of the People, please hand it to an usher during the Prayer Song.

PRAYER HYMN                                                                          On Insert

            “Glorious King”

UNISON PRAYER OF CONFESSION AND WORDS OF PROMISE

Lord, you have told us what to do.  But this love thing is hard. You have invited us to love you with everything we have, and we instead have fallen in love with our jobs, houses, and electronic toys.  Loving you intimately is scary and we often opt for another way.  You have invited us to live in loving relationship with everyone we encounter, but there are folk who are downright hard to love.  We confess our inability to love as we should.  We need your forgiveness and help living out this love thing. Free us to love as you do.  Amen.

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise God, all creatures here below:  Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise God, the source of all our gifts!

Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts!

Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit!  Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

    *PRAYER OF DEDICATION (in unison)

We thank you God for the love you show us and for the opportunity you give us to show our love for you and for your world in return.  You have brought us by your grace to this day. O Lord, what we offer you now, is but a portion of what you have given us.  We ask that you would bless it, however, and accept with it the intentions of our hearts, and minds and souls. We ask it in Jesus' name.  Amen.

Special Offering for Hurricane Katrina Recovery requested by the Council of Bishops will be received on August 27, the Sunday closest to the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina’s first strike to the US coast.  Katrina is not over.  Please join the efforts to restore our congregations, parsonages and mission facilities.  We mourn with our brothers and sisters their great losses while we embrace this opportunity for United Methodists to show commitment to our faith and to one another. Together we can restore mission and ministry while moving into a strong future.  Please open your hearts and your wallets to the Katrina Church Recovery Appeal-#818-001.  Your donations will help to:

_      Restore hurricane-damaged United Methodist facilities

_      Pay salaries for clergy while their congregations cannot do so or until pastors can be reappointed or relocated to another church

_      Establish new congregations or consolidate existing ones in storm-ravaged areas

_      Renew church-based community ministries such as day-care centers and feeding programs

_      Provide worship necessities—Bibles, hymnals, robes and so forth—to churches in need.
