    *GATHERING WORDS

One:    Early in the morning, Jesus walked the stormy water to join his terrified disciples.  “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid,” he told them.

All:       Storms rage around us this morning, Lord of Sea and Wind.  Come again and comfort our fears with your words.

One:    Peter left the boat to walk the water with Jesus, but seeing the strong wind, he grew frightened and began to sink.

All:       Strong winds blow against us, Author of Faith and Courage.  Our fears will sink us without you to save.

One:    Jesus immediately reached out to Peter and caught his hand.  “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” Jesus asked him. When they got into the boat, the wind ceased.

All:       Catch us too, before we sink, O Jesus.  Our faith is not enough, we need your strong hand.

UNISON PRAYER

Sometimes, O God, we feel battered by the waves.  We feel the wind against us and wonder if you will reach us in time.  Yet you always do.  Not even death, nor grief, nor illness, nor despair, nor the waves crashing into the boat, nor our sinking feet, can change this assurance: that you are with us, you are for us, you are among and within us.  Please give to us that faith which does not panic when things go wrong, but dares go forward with humble commitment to the next few steps to which Christ calls us.  We pray in Jesus’ name.  Amen.
