    *GATHERING WORDS

One:       The voice of God spoke over the waters,

All:          And the voice of God said, “Let there be. . . and there was.”

One:       The voice of God said, “Let there be earth and sky, living creatures and humankind and there were.”

All:          And it was good.

One:       The voice of God came from heaven,

Women:  And said, “You are my daughter, the beloved. . . “

Men:       “You are my son, the beloved. . .”

All:          “With you I am well pleased.”

One:       In the washing of the baptismal waters, we became light-

               light to the world.

All:          And God saw that the light was good!

PRAYER HYMN                                                                                                            #428

“For the Healing of the Nations”

UNISON PRAYER

We come to the waters to be cleansed, nourished, refreshed. The grime of life and worry and sin wear on us. It burdens us and beats us down and dirties our souls. We long to be cleansed so that our souls can be free. nourished so that our lives may be graced. refreshed so that our footsteps will be guided. As Jesus came to the waters, we come too in the footsteps of Jesus to our Jordan… in the footsteps of our fore bearers in the faith those who crossed rivers from old to new… from yesterday into tomorrow. God calls us to the waters … Calls us from dreams to life from yesterday to tomorrow from life to death. Take us by the hand, Jesus, and lead us to the waters. Take us by our hearts, John, and wash us in the waters. Take us by our souls, Holy Spirit, and raise us from the waters. Take us by our lives, O God, and lead us out of the waters. Alleluia! We are cleansed, nourished and refreshed, for life… for ministry… for community… for eternity. Alleluia!  Amen.
